Villages surrounding Milton KeynesSituated six miles southeast of Milton Keynes, Woburn Sands straddles the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, with most of its houses and shops in the latter county. The small town is aptly named, as most of it stands on sandy soil. A beautifully wooded and heather-clad expanse with sandy paths extends for several miles on its southern side, in the locality known as Aspley Heath. These wooded heights rise to more than 500 feet above sea level. Woburn Sands merges on its eastern side with the Bedfordshire village of Aspley Guise. Two miles to the south lies the small town of Woburn, with its unspoilt Georgian centre. Nearby is Woburn Abbey the ancestral home of the Dukes of Bedford, which contains a large Safari Park in its extensive grounds. The Abbey and Safari Park are open to the public for most of the year. General Information Woburn Sands prides itself on the many facilities it has to offer. Education is provided by the state lower and middle schools, and we also have a selection of fee-paying schools, nurseries and playgroups. Young people are well catered for in out-of-school activities, which include guiding, scouting, tennis, martial arts, theatre, music and youth clubs. Our recreation ground has an enclosed play area for young children, and for the more energetic there are football and basketball facilities. Nearby, the former fire station has been converted into a youth club, with the help of a National Lottery grant. Adult leisure activities are numerous too. We can offer tennis, bowls and snooker, as well as cricket (with Aspley Guise) and golf for beginners to champions at courses nearby in Wavendon, Aspley Guise and Woburn. We are proud of our town brass band which has groups for all ages. A supporter of several charities, it entertains us several times a year on Mowbray Green, in the High Street and in local theatres. Other daytime and evening activities take place in hall's for hire, including two in the High Street, owned by the Town Council. Particularly well supported is the Gardening Club with its spring and summer shows. An annual Christmas Fayre takes place in the High Street, when Christmas lights are switched on. Senior citizens are not forgotten in the variety of activities on offer. We are pleased to give some daycare to older people through Dega, a local charity. We have a large, well-equipped medical centre at Asplands, off Wood Street, and a modern dental surgery in Theydon Avenue. Our Library in Hardwick Road is housed in a former Quaker Meeting House. The present building stands on an earlier 17th century site which included its own burial ground where headstones can still be seen.
