How you can be helped by MKWA

Milton Keynes Women's Aid is a local charity affiliated to Women's Aid Federation England. It provides several services:

  • Outreach projects for women and children
  • A 24 hour Emergency Helpline 0800 197 1014 which is answered 365 days a year especially for use out of office hours
WHAT IS THE REFUGE?

  • 17 bedrooms with basin
  • shared kitchens ,bathrooms, lounge-diners, laundry rooms, outdoor spaces etc
  • advice on the options open to you
  • advice on benefits
  • referrals to other agencies if you wish
  • support in going to court , housing office etc
  • events and activities
  • a Counselling Service for residents
WHAT IS THE OUTREACH SERVICE?
  • A service for women and children who are experiencing domestic violence who may or who may not be living at the Refuge
  • A service for women and children who are undecided about whether to come in or who may have left.
  • Easy access to information and advice

  • Support for children
MORE ABOUT THE OVERALL SERVICE

  • Women can come to the refuge by referral or by making direct contact themselves
  • The Refuge tries as far as possible to operate an "Open Door" policy but the Refuge is not always the appropriate place
  • If the Refuge is full staff will try to find space elsewhere
  • Residents have to make payments under their "licence to occupy" (rather like rent) which can often be paid by Housing Benefit. In addition all residents pay a service charge
  • There is no time limit on staying at the Refuge - you may decide to make a complete break with your partner or you may feel you want to give the relationship another try. If you decide to go back you will not be judged and you can always contact the Refuge again.
